The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) today announced the recipients of the Qwest Scholarship Program. Alexis Arnold from Portland Christian High School and Nicholas Hall of Ashland High School are the winners for Spring 2010. Alexis and Nicholas have shown the truest form of a student-athlete. "Qwest is pleased to partner with OSAA to honor fine student athletes like Alexis and Nicholas," said Judy Peppler, Qwest President
for Oregon. "We hope these scholarships help these fine young people continue their development both on and off the field."
Arnold has had a tremendous impact during her time at Portland Christian. She has devoted her time on the student council as
Missions Coordinator where she helped implement Powertuff Volleyball matches to raise money for a needy family and a Christmas
tree that sponsored the Portland Rescue Mission. Arnold has been instrumental in a school-wide volunteering campaign for the
Portland Rescue Mission where Portland Christian students would take time to help those less fortunate. She is a dual sport athlete
as she participated on the 2010 2A Girls State Championship Basketball team and 2nd place 2010 2A Girls Track & Field team.
Hall was the starting shortstop of the 2010 5A Baseball runners-up, the Ashland Grizzles. His career at Ashland isn't personified by his accomplishments on the field, but in the classroom and community. In the classroom, Nicholas graduated as one of the school's valedictorians in 2010. In the community, he gives back by helping kids get involved in local YMCA events, donating his time as a coach and official. Outside of the YMCA, Hall has donated his time to the Ashland Food Bank and his local church. Hall plans on attending Pacific Lutheran University this fall. The Qwest Scholarship Program, administered by the OSAA, recognizes six high school student-athletes each school year who make a difference in their communities through leadership skills and a commitment to community service. This program promotes and inspires student-athletes to better the communities in which they live using leadership skills and abilities. The scholarships are awarded based on the student-athletes level of commitment to community service and a demonstrated ability to lead their peers. Each season (Fall, Winter, Spring) two student-athletes will be chosen to receive a $1,000 college scholarship from Qwest and the OSAA. The winners are selected by representatives from Qwest and the OSAA. Student-athletes recognized as a Qwest Player of the Game/Qwest Athlete of the Meet during the 2009-10 school year are eligible to apply for the Qwest Scholarship Program. These student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher and have completed at least 10 hours of community service in the past calendar year to be eligible. Support for the scholarship program is part of Qwest's mission to support community-based programs that generate high-impact and measurable results, focusing on pre-K through grade 12 education. The Oregon School Activities Association is a private non-profit, board governed association comprised of 293 member high schools. The OSAA, sanctioned by the Oregon State Board of Education and a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations, annually sponsors 116 state championships in 19 sports and activities.
