Music
Music is a gift from God and is meant to be shared. Elementary students receive two music classes a week from a certified music instructor. At Portland Christian, students experience music in many ways by:
- Singing as a group
- Learning about instruments
- Studying musical notation and composition (writing their own songs)
- Studying music history – famous composers and songs
- Experiencing ear training
- Singing spirituals, folk songs, opera, music from other cultures
- Learning about music in relation to other arts
- Playing a band instrument in Beginning Band (offered to 4th and 5th graders)
Students have a chance to shine through performances like:
- Christmas program – preschool (ECE) through 5th grade come together in December singing about our Savior’s birth
- Chapel – patriotic chapels, talent show chapels, class performances throughout the year
- Easter/Grandparents Day – different performances each year to honor Easter
- Kindergarten – students give adorable performances all year and at Kinder Graduation
- Recorders – 4th graders give a recorder concert
- STOMP – 5th graders create their own Broadway style STOMP performance
- Spring musical – 4th and 5th graders put on an amazing Christ-centered musical
Visual Arts
As God is creative, the study of arts at Portland Christian is a vital part of education.
At the elementary campus students:
- Explore their God-given creativity
- Learn about:
- Basic principles of design
- Artists and their bodies of work
- Art styles
- Art history
- Art in different cultures
- How art is a language to communicate ideas
- Reflecting God’s character in their own creations
- Work with multiple mediums like:
- Clay
- Collage
- Photography
- Fabric painting
- Maker space
- Sketching
- Sewing
- Watercolor
Student artwork is displayed:
- Throughout the school, year-round
- In the school-wide annual student showcase
- In community annual art shows
