Department Purpose Statements It is the purpose of the Social Studies department of Portland Christian Schools to ignite a passion in both students and teachers to recognize God's guiding hand throughout the past to the present, in order to give them an appreciation and understanding of historical events and cultures in their context and how it applies today. It is the purpose of the Fine, Performing, and Industrial Arts Department at Portland Christian Schools to enable students to physically express the talents and gifts that have been given to them by our Creator, to understand and develop unique avenues to worship and glorify God, and to equip our students with the wisdom and skills to emulate God's Perfect Creativity. The passion of the Health and PE Department is to create students who understand the relationship between stewardship, wellness, and its influence in their pursuit of God's will in lifelong service. The purpose of the ISP (International Student Program) is to welcome students from around the world and challenge them academically as they improve their command of the English language, extend to them the love of Christ, and provide them with the shelter of family. Science: Discerning God's truth as we discover order in creation through developing inquiry and evaluation skills (i.e. experimental design and website evaluation) and promoting foundational scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills to equip our students to be ambassadors for Christ. It is the purpose of the Mathematics department of Portland Christian Jr/Sr High School to glorify God by exposing His hand in mathematics, to prepare students for higher learning, and inspire students to continue seeking mathematical truth. Bible: To understand the truth of God's Word and to live it. Foreign Language: Our purpose, based on the truth that God is the supreme communicator and originator of all language, is to teacher students to listen, read, write, and speak in American Sign, French, Japanese, and Spanish. We also strive to guide students in the understanding and respect of these diverse cultures, so that our students are prepared to minister to all of humanity's social, moral, and spiritual needs. English: Our purpose is to train students in reading, writing and speaking skills so that they will be discerning readers, fluent writers and compelling speakers who bring glory to God through the gift of language. |
