“If you study Math, you will study about God.”

This year, PCS proudly inducted 11 new students into the ΜΑΘ National High School Mathematics Honors Society.  The students inducted are:

Seniors:  Hung T. Le, Caleb Orella, Yesenia Teeman, Nguyen Tran, Yudian (Jenny) Xiao

Juniors:  Jihoon (Jason) Kim

Sophomores:  Elijah M. Chapman, Luke Lehman, Kirk Mazurowski, Hyunseok (Tony) Oh, Elise Ortman

The ΜΑΘ National Mathematics Honor Society is "dedicated to inspiring a keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in … students." (http://www.mualphatheta.org)

Requirements for induction include:

  • Must be in at least 10th grade
  • Must have successfully completed Algebra 2 or its equivalent
  • Must have completed at least one high school math course as a high school student at Portland Christian Schools
  • Must maintain an overall grade point average of at least 3.5
  • Must maintain an unweighted mathematics grade point average of at least 3.5.

The goal of the Portland Christian chapter of ΜΑΘ is to foster a better understanding and love of mathematics, while students serve their peers, school, and the Lord by helping others in their studies of mathematics. With that in mind, ΜΑΘ members are required to complete 20 service hours, ten of which must be fulfilled by tutoring other students. ΜΑΘ members do not take lightly this unique opportunity to tutor fellow schoolmates.

Senior Hung Le looks forward to helping improve students’ math class grades by helping them solve their problems during the tutoring sessions.  And since sophomore Luke Lehman already helps friends out in math, he will easily fulfill the community service part of ΜΑΘ.

Lehman's favorite part of math is algebra and graphing. And he says, practically, being part of the National Math Honor Society also looks good in his high school transcript.

Some of this year’s inductees truly love math.  Newly inducted Kirk Mazurowski, a sophomore enjoys algebra.  He finds that math “works well in my head,” as he explains why it is his favorite subject. He sees math as helping him find a job in the future and using his math skills to figure out home projects.

And there are others that say they don't like math, like Le.  He admits though, that he is good at it. His favorite type of math:  “probabilities, because it’s applicable to real life.”

ΜΑΘ members – we are proud of each and every one you!  Congratulations to all eleven 2019 inductees  -- Portland Christian’s fourth year of ΜΑΘ membership!
