Recognizing and Giving Opportunities to Outstanding Students

March 30, 2022

On March 14, 2022, PCS honored all the honor society inductees from the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years.  Students and their families, and teacher advisors from the National Honor Society, MAQ National Mathematics Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta) and the National Art Honor Society gathered at the high school campus.

To be a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior.  Students shall have been in attendance at PCS for at least one semester and attained an accumulative GPA of at least 3.50, over a minimum period of two semesters. Advisor Mrs. Deleana Coyle-Ray reminded the students of their eligibility, based on the pillars of NHS – character, scholarship, leadership and service. (www.nhs.us)

Principal Mr. Troy Wagner led the students in the NHS pledge, to "endeavor to advance the welfare of the school, the well-being of [their] community, and the honor of this society."  (from the NHS pledge).

The MAQ National Mathematics Honor Society is "dedicated to inspiring a keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in … students." (http://www.mualphatheta.org)

Requirements for induction include being in at least 10th grade, successfully completed Algebra 2 or its equivalent, completed at least one high school math course as a high school student at PCS, maintain an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 and maintain an unweighted mathematics grade point average of at least 3.5.  MAQ members are required to complete 20 service hours, ten of which must be fulfilled by tutoring other students.

Most importantly for our students, the math department believes that beyond how to apply math to daily life, to appreciate the beauty of numbers and how they function, PCS high school students study about God in Math class!

Mrs. Joeal Mazurowski, advisor and Mr. Andrew Jannsen, Mathematics Department Chair introduced and inducted the new MAQ members.
