During the January 2018 Alumni Chapel, six alumni reflected back on the times at Portland Christian Schools in answer to a question posed by Jeanne Lampi, Alumni Director.

What do you appreciate now that you did not appreciate when you were a student at Portland Christian? . . . in looking back, just the Biblical worldview that's taught through all the classes, through science, through looking at history. And it was Portland Christian's ability to integrate not just tell cute little stories but really, right, integrate a worldview that became the person I am, and the ability I have to stand, stand strong. I really wish I would've listened to the Bible classes a little more, because I ... you're being taught amazing things amazing Scripture. The number one thing the number one value I received here is the verses, the Bible verses. They're like seared in my mind. You know, seniors, you're going to be challenged next year no matter where you go. You're going to be challenged in your faith you're going to be challenged with your friends. So this is the foundation. I just assumed once I got to college, all the teachers were going to be like Portland Christian teachers. And they're not. And so your teachers are amazing. Teachers that supported our family through the years. The Beaumonts Eleanor Halsey, the Remsburg.... And I think for me, I didn't realize, like they all said the community that's here and the amount of work and time the teachers put into your life. That's pretty moving. And there's people here, even the ones that don't seem like they care, even the teachers that seems a little strict they care about you a lot and even the ones that make you do things you don't want to do. That one teacher that took away your phone maybe the one teacher that made you tardy maybe the one teacher that told Mrs. James you weren't listening or you were being naughty. All those teachers are doing something - they're trying to train you up to be a responsible adult. Mrs. Dowd - the name over the library. She's the reason I'm a teacher. She taught me how to write, she taught me how to have a voice in this world that doesn't care what you have to say. She is is why I'm here and I remember her everyday. She was a hard teacher . . . not getting As either, in her classes if you can believe that. I remember emailing her after I took the AP test, shocked that I got a 4 on the AP test and wouldn't have to take two or three classes in college because of it. And I still have that email from her where she emailed me back and she knew that I could do it. ... the level of education you get here. I remember a perfect example - was in high school, I had a teacher Mrs. Dowd. She was my English teacher and she's now in heaven. But she was really a hard English teacher. I could not for the life of me get an A in Mrs. Dowd's class.  I was like, when is this lady giving me a break - I'm trying really hard. When I went to college though, I took writing classes and I wrote a couple different papers I was getting As on my most all my papers. And one person even wrote on my paper, you have a flair for writing.  I was like, Mrs. Dowd never said that. So, just, that's something I'll have for the rest of my life, the quality of education that was instilled in me here in Portland Christian. Something that follows you in college and it helps you build on that foundation and it's really going to help you in the workplace a lot later on. ... the sports, it was a great discipline to have practice everyday after school - the fitness aspect of it. But also it teaches you kind of how to prioritize and what you need to do during the day to be able to be successful in school while also participating in a sport or in arts as well. It's the same thing. You're dedicated to the play, or choir, or whatever you're doing. It did pay off in college too.  I knew how to prioritize and how to study, I knew how to get my work done in an orderly manner to be successful. So I'd say, really appreciate your sports and all your extracurriculars right now and don't take them for granted cuz they're pretty awesome. So I think I took for granted the community that is really here and I didn't appreciate it enough because it's really easy to make friends . . . Friends. I just assumed once I graduated from Portland Christian, I would have all the same friends. I was social, I knew everyone and when I got to college, it'd be the same. No. I got to college and I didn't hardly interact with anyone. Some of the best friends I have right now are the ones that I had from Portland Christian. The thing that I wish that I, that I think I took for granted was the community here. I started in 6th grade back when 6th grade was at the elementary campus. And we were all friends going through 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, 12th grade. My advice would be to just invest in your friendships that you have here. My advice to all you kids here would be get out and just do stuff with your friends. Go to the school functions. Interact with people outside of your normal social group. Looking back I wish I would have spent a lot more time engaging in community, and with the other friends that I had at school here because there's a lot of good people that you might never know cuz you just never spent the time to talk to them. Stay true to the Word of God. Stay true to God's word. Listen to your teachers. All your teachers, not just your Bible teachers. Walk in the light of God's Word.
