Celebrating Our Graduating Class

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our 41 graduating seniors have had to reset expectations as many events were canceled or changed: senior thesis oral presentations and papers, senior mothers’ tea, state thespian competition, spring musical “Narnia,” missions week, serve day, prom, artsys award night, international student program spring host family potluck, booster awards, senior chapel, senior breakfast, senior walk at the elementary school… Plans are moving forward for a graduation ceremony at a later time -- the details of who, what, when, where, and how, are yet to come.

It’s overwhelming to think of everything that has been canceled during this class’s last year in high school.  Several international students have returned to their home countries in Asia; they continue their distance learning in the wee hours of the morning during class times here in Portland.  They are determined to finish strong and graduate from Portland Christian Schools!

Without all the events that lead up to graduation, PCS administrators put together a plan to recognize our seniors.  “Congratulations Class of 2020” yard signs were designed, ordered, and assembled.

On Monday, May 4, administrators and staff worked together to deliver the signs to every graduate’s home, along with  their graduation announcements, and the athletes’ banners that had hung in the school gym for the year. Cheering, honking, and physically distant encouragement and congratulations were the order of the day!

Social media prevented this from being a total surprise after the first several deliveries were made, but it was still touching to see students emerge from their homes, smiles and spirits intact.
