“I enjoy singing with friends, it makes me want to sing more!” shares 7th grader Adam Xiong

January 12, 2023

The event is an honor music ensemble program that has been held annually for more than 60 years.  Select student musicians from middle school choir, band and orchestra, and high school jazz band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, orchestra, and mixed choir gather together for a couple of days to experience the privilege of rehearsing and performing with renowned guest conductors.

To be part of this special program, these students were recommended by their music teacher, Mr. Joseph Ostrand and were also required to submit audition recordings. It was the first time the four junior high choir students had to create an audition recording. “It was nerve wracking!” shared Adam and Svea. Each student had their own a capella recording.  The four 7th graders, Svea, Sam, Jacoby and Adam are very excited to go away for a night and meet other students and sing with a large choir.  “I like singing, performing for God, and representing the school,” said Sam. All of them have been in Mr. Ostrand’s choir class since 6th grade. Jacoby and Adam remember singing in 4th & 5th grade musicals while in elementary school, and have continued their love of singing in junior high.

The four high school students had their extensive audition recording. They had several audition tracks: scales, lyrical lines, choral, and sight-reading exercises. For their performance on Sunday, they have to memorize six pieces!
