Teacher Feature: Jeri Gentry

Mrs. Gentry

Why did you choose to work at Portland Christian?

When Portland Lutheran closed its doors about eight years ago, my husband and I went looking for a new school for our sons. My sister's three children all graduated from PCS, and it was a great fit for our family.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Portland Christian?

I enjoy the feeling of family and the Christ-centered approach to nurturing children.

Why did you choose to teach?

I was inspired by my older sister, who taught special education for 40 years. I also felt that God was calling me to a new vocation.

What’s the best thing about working with students?

The best thing is when we can laugh together and when the "lightbulb goes on." When a student feels valued and successful, I can't stop smiling.

What is your favorite part of the school day?

My favorite part of the school day is greeting students as they arrive in the morning. I want them to feel noticed and welcome.

How have you experienced God in teaching?

He gives me strength for each day's tasks, and he places people in my path that lift me up.

Favorite scripture verse?

Psalm 139:14

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful. I know that full well."

Tell us a little about your family, please!

My husband, Todd, teaches middle school. We have two sons, Sean, a 10th grader, and Aedan, a 7th grader. I grew up with three older sisters.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy reading, hiking and travel. I am a bit obsessed with waterfalls.

Tell us something your students don't know about you:

Students may not know that I went to Italy as an 8th grader with my family. My dad was in the Navy, so we traveled with 37 sailors.

Anything else you would like to share?

I am a little person at 4-foot-7 and have nicknamed myself "Gramma-Mom" because I became a parent in my 40s. God has blessed me in so many unexpected ways!
