Teacher Feature: Kevin Hilbert

Mr. Hilbert and class running an experiment

Why did you choose to work at Portland Christian?

I want to teach science from a biblical worldview, not a secular one.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at PCS?

Getting to know that students has been amazing. The coworkers are great too!

Why did you choose your specific area of teaching?

To me there is nothing greater than to learn and teach about the body that God gave us. That is the greatest professional blessing a guy like me can ever have.

What’s the best thing about working with students?

Celebrating first experiences and academic “ah ha!” moments. Truly the best!

What is your favorite part of the school day?

When students leave class and say thank you ... and mean it!

How have you experienced God in teaching at PCS?

Many of the experiences and lessons that God has allowed me to have (short and long-term) repeatedly come up when I teach. I am constantly reminded that everything does truly happen for a reason and if you are lucky, God will show you that reason before you die, and then you get to help others. Teachers are truly blessed!

Favorite scripture verse?

1 Corinthians 10:31

“Whatever you do, whether it’s eating or drinking or anything else, do it all so as to bring glory to God.

Tell us a little about your family, please!

Wife Jamie is a Naturopathic Physician. She currently works as the director of education at a massage college. Daughter Olivia is seven and in second grade. Plays basketball, bouldering, swims, bikes, and hikes. Daughter Lily is five and in kindergarten. Does anything her sister does and tries to win every time!

What do you like to do in your free time?

Exercise (biking, hiking, backpacking, bouldering) and garden.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I had to go to driving school three times in high school for 'excessive speed.' I even got a ticket driving home from driving school which did not go over well with my father …

Anything else you would like to share?

Life is good!
