Teacher Feature: Andrew Jannsen

Mr. Jannsen coaching cross country

Why did you choose to work at Portland Christian?

I very much appreciated and valued the Christian education that I received at Portland Christian. So when I was offered a teaching position at my alma mater, I was glad to accept. It also didn't hurt that the position included being the head football coach.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at PCS?

This is a tough question because there is so much that I enjoy. It's probably the students. I really enjoy seeing them learn, understand a biblical perspective, and continue to serve the Lord as they leave PC.

Why did you choose your specific area of teaching?

I've always liked math, and it seemed like math teachers were always in demand. The more I have taught it, the more I have come to love and appreciate it for being a beautiful and useful part of God's creation.

What’s the best thing about being a teacher / working with students?

The variety that I experience in my job on a day to day basis. Each of my students and classes are so varied. When you add in coaching and ski club, it's a lot of variety.

What is your favorite part of the school day?

I'm not sure that I have a favorite part, but I really enjoy my AP classes.

How have you experienced God at PCS and in teaching?

First, I have consistently seen God's provision in blessing me with a financial situation where I can continue to teach at PC. Secondly, I see God's glory revealed in the math that I teach each day. Finally, I am blessed to see God working in the lives of each of my students and athletes.

Favorite scripture verse?

This is a tough question. I really value so many. I guess if I had to pick a favorite, I would select II Corinthians 3:18 or II Corinthians 5:21:

II Corinthians 3:18

"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."

II Corinthians 5:21

"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."

Tell us about your family!

I have been very happily married to my wife, Jessica, for 34 years. I have two wonderful daughters, Kara Lise and Avielle, who are both PC graduates. Kara (class of 2013) is married and has one daughter, Oaklyn (16 months old). Kara works at PSU as the administrative assistant to the Dean of the School of Social Work. Avielle (class of 2018) is a student at PSU, works at the airport, and has been the JH track coach at PC for the last 3 years.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to ski, read, watch sports (football, hockey, skiing, and track). I also like to travel and spend time with my family.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I enjoy many academic subjects. My best grades in school were in Biology, Economics, History, and Anatomy. I also really enjoy art. One of my favorite classes in college was art history, and I really like photography and architecture as art forms.

Anything else you would like to share?

I am blessed to serve as an elder and preach regularly at Eastgate Bible Chapel. I have attended Eastgate all of my life as my father attended all of his life as well.
