First-Time Entries, Gold Key: PC Artists Shine at Regional Scholastic Art Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens, offering scholarships and national recognition to young artists and writers across the United States and Canada. Students in grades 7–12 (age 13 and older) are invited to submit their original art and writing for opportunities that include awards, publication, exhibition, and scholarships.
Art teacher Mrs. Evy McLean shares, “It’s quite an honor for a student’s work to be selected by a national panel of judges since the Region-at-Large West Art Scholastic Awards encompasses six states (California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Utah). This is a widely recognized prize that is a mark of excellence for every student winner. Along with receiving an award, there are scholarship opportunities for which students can apply.”

Out of more than 3,320 students across those six states who received awards, PC students earned seven awards—an incredible accomplishment and a testament to their creativity, dedication, and artistic excellence.
It was a first-time entry into the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for both of our Gold Key winners – making their achievement even more exciting!
Senior Miles Coburn had never even heard of the competition and certainly wasn’t expecting to win. He earned a regional Gold Key for his photograph titled “Horizon.” He shares, “It has fun, cool colors and it’s a photo of my dad.” Receiving the award has been deeply encouraging: “It’s confirmation that I can go for what I want in photography and not hold myself back.”
Eighth grader Clara Crummett also captured a Gold Key for her scratchboard and oil pastel piece, “Hedgehog at Night.” She says she “feels very good” about the honor, adding, “I’ve never won anything before!”
