Athlete of the Week – Scarlette Fisher

PC junior and cheer captain Scarlette Fisher is the latest Jersey Mike’s Athlete of the Week. With the cheer team headed to state after strong finishes in their first two competitions, Scarlette shares her answers to AD Lyslo’s Q+A below.

Scarlette, first off, congrats on being named Jersey Mike’s Athlete of the Week. The buzz around the school right now is that the PC Cheer Team is going to state. Congratulations to you and your team. How do feel the cheer season has gone so far?

The season has been a very successful season we have accomplished quite a bit of our goals for the season. Including a first and second place in our first two competitions.

This is a relatively new program at PC, but you and your team are gaining a lot of momentum with camps, clinics, and now a state tournament appearance. What does it feel like to be a part of a growing program and do you feel a sense of pride knowing you and your team are growing this?

Growing a new program definitely has its challenges, but it is also exciting to be a part of that building process. I feel like I am producing something for future girls to succeed in and for it to become their passion. There is definitely a little bit of pride knowing my team and I are building this together.

What kind of team goals and individual goals did you have going into the season? And have you come close to achieving these goals?

One of our goals this year was to make a name for ourselves. We have done this not only in competing but also bringing home a few plaques. Another goal this year is that we really wanted to have unity among our teammates. As a captain, I feel it is my responsibility to help create that atmosphere. So I have made it a priority to always pray my team out of practice, have devotions before a competition, be positive, and include everyone.

You entered into your first two events in January and February and earned a second and first-place finish. Were you surprised by the success or was this something you expected?

It was certainly unexpected. We came in as a very small team only having six, as most teams have fifteen or more cheerleaders. But we did our best and worked hard, and it payed off.

So here you are going to state. What are the goals for your team at state, and knowing this is your first trip to state, is there some nervous energy not knowing what to expect?

Our goal is to place in the top five, and we should be able to do that if we do not make any major mistakes. There might be a few nerves, but we are mostly thrilled for this opportunity and experience.

Moving forward, now that you have seen success with this program, will expectations be higher? What would you tell athletes who are interested in cheer?

Yes, I think moving into next season will have higher expectations. As a team we want to prioritize our stunts to make them more impressive to the audience. To any athletes interested in cheer I would tell them it has a community like no other sport. It is essential to trust your teammates to throw stunts and be on counts for dances. It creates an environment where we want to work together and succeed with each other.
