Award-Winning Performances Highlight PC’s Anaheim Trip

The high school music program’s March trip to the Anaheim Heritage Festival was a resounding success, showcasing the talent, dedication, and hard work of Portland Christian’s student musicians.

All ensembles were evaluated based on tone, intonation, interpretation, and technique. A Gold rating—the highest possible—represents scores between 90–100 and signifies a superior performance, while a Silver rating (80–89) reflects an excellent performance level.

Portland Christian was represented by two instrumental ensembles in a field of 20 competing groups. The Concert Band earned a Silver rating and placed 3rd in its division, reflecting a strong and polished performance.

The Brass Quartet stood out among the competition, receiving a Gold rating and taking 1st place. In addition to their top finish, they were honored with the Adjudicator Award—an honor given by judges to select ensembles for outstanding musicianship—and the prestigious “Outstanding Band” award, recognizing their performance as one of the best among all instrumental groups at the festival.

The school also sent two vocal ensembles to compete. The Concert Choir earned a Gold rating and placed 2nd in its division, competing among 16 total choral ensembles, with eight in their division.

The Vocal Ensemble, performing in the Chamber category, also received a Gold rating. Despite being the only group of its size in that category, they delivered an excellent performance that earned top marks from the judges.

A highlight of the trip came during the awards ceremony at the Hyperion Theater in Disney California Adventure, when a student receives the “Stand Strong” award. A nominated student who receives this honor is to have “shown strength of character and a passion for the arts as they pursue excellence, the student should be someone who has stood out by going above and beyond to make a wish come true for friends, family member, or their community.”

Nominated by Mr. Ostrand, the “Stand Strong” award was presented to PCS 11th grader Isaac Schroder. “Described as a leader in the high school drama department, a mentor to younger students”, and “a big brother” to many, Isaac exemplifies what it means to serve with humility and excellence. In addition to his involvement in the arts, he is a National Honor Society member, a multi-sport varsity athlete, a Student Council participant, and a top academic performer.

Beyond the festival, the group of 31 students and 7 parent chaperones enjoyed a full and memorable itinerary, including visits to Biola University, Concordia University Irvine, California Baptist University, and Christ Cathedral, along with time at Disneyland.

Congratulations to all of our music program students for representing Portland Christian with excellence. We’re grateful to our many supporters who made this trip possible through their generosity and encouragement!
